NADPO is delighted to present a 2-hour seminar, free to members, on practical advice from technical and legal specialists on cyber security incident preparedness and response.
Introduced by Lynn Wyeth, NADPO’s Digital Officer, the event will be delivered by Alex Ustych from 5 Essex Chambers and Anthony Rance, Danny Howett & Thomas Barrett from Cyxcel. They’ll be discussing:
- Incident response preparedness and strategy.
- The immediate response to an incidence: looking at the technical/forensics, common issues, vulnerabilities, and solutions.
- Data protection compliance, breach notifications and assisting the ICO investigation.
- Managing civil claims: what are claims worth, how to minimise legal costs, how to deal with group actions
Alex Ustych, Barrister – 5 Essex Chambers
Alex Ustych specialises in data protection and privacy law, with a particular emphasis on cybersecurity and AI. He is on the Attorney General’s B Panel of Counsel and is ranked as a leading junior in The Legal 500 directory (for data protection and inquests/inquiries). His clients include technology companies, charities, regulators, talent agencies and national newspapers. Alex has a particular interest in the impact of emerging technologies (such as AI) on individuals’ rights. He advises companies in novel industry areas (such as Virtual Reality) as well as public bodies in respect of major digital projects, including on international data transfers. He is a committee member of the Society for Computers & Law.
Thomas Barrett:
Thomas leads CyXcel’s Data Protection and Privacy Practice where he helps clients navigate the intricate web of domestic compliance including cross border data flows.
One of the foremost experts on data protection, Thomas served for 16 years in HM Government Legal Department and was the lead lawyer and a core negotiator for the world’s first of the UK US Data Access Agreement, and most recently was the Home Office’s lead coordinating lawyer for the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill. His experience in shaping national data protection policies, delivering related legislation and advising on both proactive and reactive compliance with both local and international requirements adds valuable expertise to the CyXcel team.
Beyond CyXcel, Thomas is a Fee Paid judge of the First Tier Tribunal sitting in the General Regulatory Chamber. He is also a Bencher of his professional organisation, the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, where he volunteers in governance and mentoring roles as well as being a founder member of the Equalities Diversity and Inclusion committee.
Danny Howett:
Danny is a Technical Director at CyXcel, leading the strategic and technical response to support organisations before, during, and after a cyber security incident.
He brings his expertise in digital forensic investigation and cyber incident management spanning over 10 years in both Consultancy and Law Enforcement roles, and extensive experience in dark web threat intelligence and investigation, with an in-depth knowledge of the methods and motivations of threat actors, helping to protect businesses before an incident occurs.
Anthony Rance:
Anthony is a Partner and solicitor at CyXcel. He specialises in incident response and has assisted clients with numerous high profile data breach cases and cyber incidents, including incidents involving highly confidential and sensitive data.
Anthony is also an expert in data and technology disputes arising out of commercial contracts and distressed IT outsourcing projects, as well as cases involving the misuse of confidential information, data theft and restraint of trade. He has nearly 20 years’ experience in the contentious arena and has a deserved reputation for handling legally and factually complex matters.
Leading legal directories have described Anthony as “outstanding” and “superb on IT” with “wide-ranging expertise in data theft”.
Lynn Wyeth:
Former Head of Information Governance and Data Protection Officer at a large unitary local authority for 20 years, Lynn is the Digital Officer at NADPO.
Lynn has extensive experience of practical handling of security incidents and data breaches. Her council was subject to large ransomware attack in 2024.
